We bought this because we wanted to have a copy of the wonderful CBC sponsored radio drama that we had listened to for every Thursday night for most of the first year we were married. That was 30 or so years ago when we were short on funds but high on the classics. We wanted the copy so we could play it to our grandkids at home and on the road via CD players.This product was substantially less expensive that others on offer from Amazon. At first we were chagrinned to find that we had not read carefully and the CD was in MP3 format which does not, of course, fit conventional CD players. But with a little work we soon found out how to use Media Player to convert the files to a format that would be saved on our hard disk and then quickly burned to a handful of CD's.
So as with Odysseus, all's well that ends well. Whichever way you choose to get there, give a thought to retracing the old via the new-new-newest.

"The Odyssey of Homer - 1st Edition" implies that it is the first edition of a 2700+ year old, originally oral work, which is obviously not the case. Furthermore, nowhere in the page or preview does it indicate whose translation of the poem it is, but based on the older poetic style of translation, I would be seriously surprised if this is even actually a first edition of the translator's work. This company should be prohibited from calling their products "First Editions."
This appears to be the Alexander Pope translation which Johnson praised. Rhymed heroic couplets will likely not be to readers taste if they seek a translation into something resembling modern English, e.g, the Fitzgerald or Lattimer translations.
Pope was told to his face that the 'translation' was a good [18th century] poem, "but you must not call it Homer."
The "1st Edition" led me to think that an earlier or more authentic text had been found and translated. But, that was not the case.
Still, if you want to read Pope and see what Johnson admired, this is a good edition at a reasonable price.
I searched through the on-line advertisement to see who the translator might be, as this volume does not appear to be written in greek. There is no indication of who should be blamed for this atrocity, but the rhyming couplet format seems to have the fingerprints of Alexander Pope.
This may not be a "First Edition", but it is surely an old one. It is a disservice to modern readers to fob off an old and queerly translated edition as "Homer".
I rated this volume at one star, simply because there is no provision to rate it at zero.
I couldn't wait to get my hands on a real first edition of my favorite Homeric poem. What would "first edition" mean, I wondered? Would it be the dried and desiccated corpse of blind Homer himself (since he didn't write the poem down ever during his lifetime, being, you know, blind and all)? Would it be a DVD or CD recorded in Greek by an adventuring time traveler who recorded Homer at one of his first recitals of the poem? (This is really what I was hoping for, since such a solution would promise many more future recordings that might answer all sorts of historical riddles from the past, like who shot Kennedy or which Kennedys slept with Marilyn. More certainly, such a recording would answer authoritatively a number of lingering questions about ancient Greek pronunciation and diction.) Either way, it's under $30 for sometime either priceless or, within my understanding of modern time travel theory, impossible, and at that, a steal.
No such luck. This is a WRITTEN work, and moreover a translation, into a modern language no less. (I would have understood and happily tolerated an unannotated translation of Homeric Greek into a slightly more modern Classical Greek, but a translation to English with no contribution on the cover is nonsense.)
Buy this at your own risk, and know you are being defrauded. NOT A FIRST EDITION by any means.
I would have given this review negative stars, but I was forced to give at least one.
I have not seen the book yet, and I, too, was surprised that the translator doesn't receive proper credit. I agree that if it's in couplets it's surely the "Pope" translation, which may make it worth purchasing in itself. I haven't checked for sometime, but several years ago when I was working on my MA I wanted to get hold of a copy of Pope's translations of the Iliad and Odyssey, but found them to be hard to come by and, hence, very pricey. I wouldn't mind having an affordable copy of Pope's translation. That said, to call this version of the Odyssey the "Pope translation" is somewhat misleading, as books 2, 6, 8, 11, 12, 16, 18, and 23 were translated by scholars Broome and Fenton, and not by Alexander Pope, though he received credit (and payment!) for it. As a teacher of literature, I like to have my students compare various translations of works to examine language closely and consider how linguistic choices affect reader reception (etc.), so having another version of the Odyssey (especially one in passé rhyming couplets) readily available would be handy.
This is the translation by Alexander Pope (Books 3,5,7,9,13,14,17,21,22,24), Elijah Fenton (1,4,19) and William Broome (2,6,8,10,11,12,15,16,18,20,23), originally published in 1726. Personally I love the couplets though I know critics don't consider the style Homeric.
"First Edition" looks like the publisher's name. I can't think why they don't credit the translators on the cover. The price is high for an edition without introduction, commentary or illustrations. Everything in it must be public domain. However, if you can't find another edition of this translation, it may be worth the price.
If you love eighteenth century style this is a beautiful poem. No doubt everyone will also want to read other translations that may be closer to the original.
